Black Kids On Letterman

The Blacks Kids made their "network debut" on Letterman last night. The show itself was one of the weakest shows I've seen from Letterman. That is until Dave held up the new Black Kids album (that's right. I said album. Meaning on vinyl) Partie Traumatic.

Biggie Tee over at The Urban Core did a live blog last night during letterman. Being all supercool and all down with the hipsters that he is. Biggie was able to get this email from Owen Holmes (Black Kids bassist) prior to the shows performance.

"Just finished soundcheck. Starting on the sour mash. Paul Shaffer
looks old as dirt. All the stage furniture is fucking dingy.
Thermostat is on 48 degrees.

Wasn't it just a few short months ago these guy (and gals) were playing under the tin roof of the Burrito Gallery?

It would normally be easy to feel jealous or resentful for the Blacks Kids meteoric rise. But that is not the case with anyone who has met these kids. They without a doubt are the most down to earth and humble group you will meet. They have worked hard for a long time to get where they have. And I wish nothing but the best for the group. And I will also bet anyone, that no matter how much success the Black Kids attain. They (unlike others) will never turn their back on Jacksonville.

Community, Community, Community Festival this Sunday

It's Memorial Day Monday so some of you should be off. Please come out and support your city, your community.

When: Sunday May 25, noon till 2am. 14 hours.

Where: The Pearl and the parking lot (so bike or carpool if possible)

What: A benefit show to raise money for The Springfield Community Food Garden located on north end of The Pearl's property, to collect cans and non perishable food item for Ultimate Picnic, a organization that feeds anyone that wants to eat. So come hungry for free food. There will be a bazaar/ tents/ booths set up in the parking lot for games, awareness, and workshops. There will also be tours of the community garden. Twelve bands will be playing inside The Pearl. The Pearl staff will be working serving with various drink specials.

Who: The people throwing the event are Jaxscene, Springfield Community Garden and Ultimate Picnic, with special thanks to The Pearl. The bands are Manatella, Tuffy, Wudun, Fruit Machine, Buffalo Tears, Heavy Flow, Tough Junkie, Lazerstar, Airport Factory, Helios Eye, Sharing Needles With Jesus, and America Del Sur.

Donate: Feeling charitable if you want to donate more to The Springfield Community Garden they need old or unneeded garden tools like rakes or shovels, trash cans, extra wood for building, nails, hammers, seeds and garden plants. Please don't buy anything new, the garden believes in being organic and reusing old unwanted items. I know Ultimate Picnic needs old plates, utensils, and cups. Your unwanted can goods and nonperishable food items. Once again nothing new.

This past weekend San Marco Theater held midnight showings of the movie Bomb It. This is not a review of the movie. I'll just leave it with stating that I enjoy it.

Graffiti and/or Street Art are different things to different people. For me, I can live without the tagging. Great, you can smooch your lettering together in such a way that they are near impossible to read. Nice job. You got mad skills. If it was 1979.

If what you're doing isn't enhancing the environment it is in. Can it really be considered art? The graffiti movement for the most part has figured this out and thankfully evolved over years. It has moved way past the simple tagging of one's name on the side of a building and into a full fledged art movement.

Today I came across this video of Graffiti/street artist Blu's incredible work called Muto. Painted on the streets of Buenos Aires and Baden, this video animation made of the drawings painted on the walls of the two cities. It took months to paint, film and edit. Once again Street art taken to whole new level.

For what will most likely is a first for Jacksonville. On June 1st we will finally have a leg up on the big cites like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. We will for one night actually have art, music and culture rolled up in one very well worn pork pie hat. We will have Tom Waits in concert. That's right June 1st at the Moran Theater we (jacksonville) for at least one night, kick ass. Nana, nana, nu, nu.

I very seldom get excited about any musician or group in concert. But I don't consider Tom Waits a mere musician. He is a true artist in every since of the word. A lyrical poet that paints a vivid canvas with his music and prose in such a way that it forces you to reach out and touch it. Or be touched by it.

Tom's press conference about the tour is something else.

If you are not sure or don't know who Tom Waits is. One word. Google. You'll find plenty of his music online along with him and his videos on YouTube. I've gone ahead and saved you little time by providing one my favorites below.

A Buttery Surprise

I know have totally neglected you fellow blasphemers of late. My most humble apologies. Duty has been requiring all of my attention on other matters of J-ville goodness.

Every once in while, while just performing your daily routine you are handed a little karmic surprise. A gift that shakes you out of your routine and wakes you out of that trance one falls into when going about the mundane. This was mine.

As I gazed down in into this wonderful little surprise. My mind automatically began flipping through a mental rolodex of all those joyous occasions that is collected though life and one would associate with such an image. As memory after memory clicked by in a rapid 90's MTV, Nike commercial montage kinda way. It was with a broad smile and a warm heart that my minds eye pulled the file card of the little red headed girl and 48 hours of total lust and debauchery. Today's going to be good day. Thanks to a buttery surprise and my dear friend red.

Chamblin opens new book store downtown

Big box stores make money by selling in volume.

Chamblin Books does it by selling volumes - books, that is - in volume.

Already the biggest used-book dealer in Northeast Florida, Chamblin has opened a second store in downtown Jacksonville. Owner Ron Chamblin calls it a "soft opening" because he's still stocking shelves in the two-story building at 215 N. Laura St., half a block from Hemming Plaza.
Chamblin's expansion will test both the overall book market and downtown's retail scene.

Borders, a worldwide chain with a mega-store on Jacksonville's Southside, announced last month it will be studying financial options including a sale of the company. On the used-book front, three Jacksonville-area stores have closed in the past year - The Old Book Shop in St. Nicholas, All Booked Up in Arlington and Backwater Books in Orange Park.

Chamblin said he's using the same business model at his downtown store, called Chamblin Uptown, that as he uses at Chamblin BookMine off Roosevelt Boulevard in Ortega. Both stores are loaded with books, rivaling the number at a Barnes & Noble or Books-A-Million. Chamblin BookMine generates about $1.4 million a year in sales.

"It looks to me like there's so much competition out there and so many opportunities to buy books, so really, the advantage we have is we have so much square footage," Chamblin said. "If you have the square footage, that allows you to have the variety. That's where the draw is."
Another similarity between Chamblin BookMine and Chamblin Uptown is Chamblin owns the buildings where each store is located. Chamblin said by being the owner, he doesn't have to worry a landlord will boost leasing rates and put a financial squeeze on the bottom line.

Chamblin's new store will boost Laura Street's retail activity between Hemming Plaza and The Jacksonville Landing, said Terry Lorince, executive director of Downtown Vision, an organization representing downtown property-owners.

She said Chamblin is already well-known so the store should bring people into downtown with the bookstore as their destination. She said Chamblin Uptown will attract customers, too, from people visiting the nearby main library and Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville, plus downtown workers on their lunch breaks.

Chamblin said he considered a suburban location closer to the Southside and The Beaches where many of his existing customers live.

That spot would have given Chamblin better geographic balance with stores on both sides of Jacksonville. But he said he thinks downtown is on an upswing and the atmosphere appealed to him.

"I just think it's more fun down here, getting in on the growth," he said. "It's more interesting to me and more challenging to me."

The current hours of Chamblin Uptown are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Chamblin said he expects to expand the hours after the store is fully stocked and its cafe is up and running.

I don't know about you. To me something about these current appointees to the St. Johns Water Management District stinks.
The article from from the Times-Union is short and to the point. But if you read it a little closer it speaks volumes.

"Jacksonville lawyer Hans G. Tanzler III and a citrus industry executive are the newest appointees to the St. Johns River Water Management District's governing board.

Tanzler, 56, president of Marion Equities, succeeds Duane Ottenstroer, a Jacksonville investor. Tanzler is the son of a former Jacksonville's mayor of the same name.

Douglas C. Bournique, 56, of Vero Beach succeeds William W. Kerr of Melbourne Beach, who is an environmental consultant. Bournique has been the executive vice president of the Indian River Citrus League for nearly 30 years and previously worked for the Florida Sugar Cane League, according to his application.

The board has been wrestling with the task of planning for water demands for the district, which stretches from south of Orlando to Nassau County.

The district is considering allowing some Central Florida utilities to siphon water from the St. Johns River, which has met with growing opposition in downstream communities to the north.

Gov. Charlie Crist announced the four-year appointments Tuesday. They require state Senate confirmation."

Lets see if we can break this down a little bit. You have Tanzler, President of an equities company. Yep, highly qualified in the field of environmental management. Who is replacing a "private investor" that was appointed not once, but twice.

The second appointee Bournique, has spent 30 years working for a Central Florida citrus grower. And before that work in the Sugar Cane Industry. I don't know how knowledgeable you are about agriculture in Florida. If not, big sugar is one of most thuggish, bullying political powers not only in our state but also nationally. Not to mention one of, if not the biggest industrial polluters to Florida waters.

Bournique is replacing William W. Kerr. An ecologist, Kerr was the only person on the board with any type environmental background and degree.

So let us see what the make up of the new Water Management Board consist of.

The Chairman of a Holdings Company.
Chief human resources officer for JEA.
A civic activist.
A forestry consultant.
Seminole County Supervisor of Elections.
A guy that has no job listed but was an original member of the Friends of the St. Johns River.
Manager of Jones Turf Grass Farm.
Plus the 2 named in the story.

I ask you, other than the forester and the guy with no job and an extensive resume sitting on boards. Why are these guys deciding the fate of our water management? None of them have any type background for this type of service. Does anyone really think that the manager of a central Florida Turf Grass company or a 30 year veteran of a Central Florida Citrus grower have North Florida's best interest in mind? And the rest I'm guessing are on the board just to rub their noses in rectal areas of those with political powers.

These latest appointments still have to be confirmed by state Senate. And they will be. Unless of course you take few minute and call or email your state Senator and demand qualified individuals with backgrounds and degrees in environmental sciences.

Channel 47 News did a story tonight on Urbismus The wheatpasting street art that has taken downtown by storm.

I understand that for a topic such as this, the media needs to present both sides of the coin. I'm fairly tolerant of others opinions that differ from my own. But what's with this Steve Birtrand guy.

When given the explanation of what the images stood for. "The group says their message is to show what life would be like if Jacksonville’s abandoned buildings had people living in them. They say they only post their messages on abandoned buildings."

Stevey boy comes up this jewel. "What's the difference between that (pointing at the Ubismus image) and gang writing?"

And then follows with brilliant gem;

"I think of John Lennon when you tell me that…imagine all the people---it really doesn’t, no it really doesn’t change my mind at all…graffiti’s still graffiti…God forbid if something happened to my child and I went off and hurt the man that did something to my child…it’s still a crime for me to do that…a crime’s a crime".

Like I stated above, "I'm fairly tolerant of others opinions". But only "fairly". Steve you had your say, and you are completely entitled to your opinion. Now here's mine.

Steve you asked the difference between the Urbimus images and gang writing. Gang writing is spray painting that denotes gang activity and territory. Thus creating urban blight in an area full of life. The Urbismus Art on the other hand, is creative well thought out images placed in blighted urban areas in the hopes of creating visual interest in these lifeless parts of town. And that is the difference you dimwitted fucking twit. But that's just my opinion.

Not really a surprise, is it? We have know for some time that the general populous of Jacksonville is fat and lazy.

But come on Jax. We can do better! If we put a little effort in, maybe we can increase our occurrence on next years list. We should be able to muster up enough Envy over cities with a rich and vibrant downtown. Also with a little functional mass transit system that includes light & commuter rail thrown in should do the trick.

And let's hope with the constant increase in the republication population here. We should make a showing on the list for Avarice. We all know how much you Red blooded Republicans love your money and possessions. And not to mention how much you covet your neighbors and coworkers money and possessions.

So come on Jacksonville. With all the churches we have and all the ramped hypocrisy that entitles us too. We should expect more.

This video was sent to me by friend with a note that simply read, "watch and listen for Jacksonville connection."

I did, and was more than a little shocked at how blatant the voter fraud was here. The video is on Brasscheck TV and shows Greg Palast an investigative reporter who claims to have received some 500 mistakenly sent emails from Rove. Rove apparently mixed up .org (anti-Bush) with .com (pro-Bush) when sending the emails in question along with large files that contained lists of names to challenge.

Rampant growth and uncontrolled development are forever changing the face of Florida. Elected officials, business leaders, and others need to take action, before our state's quality of life and rich natural resources are damaged beyond repair. 1000 Friends of Florida is calling on state leaders to empower Floridians to play a greater role in planning for the future of their communities. 1000 Friends has outlined a "Citizen Bill of Rights," which would give the people of Florida:

1. The Right to Shape Changes to Your Neighborhood, Community, and Region. Developers are required to prepare a citizen participation plan, notify impacted property owners and neighborhood associations (using formal lists compiled by the local government), and conduct developer workshops with citizens to identify all issues of concern prior to any public hearing. The developer must then present to the appropriate commission a list of all issues raised, and indicate if and how they were resolved. Unresolved issues then become the focus of discussion, rather than an afterthought covered in two or three minutes of public testimony.

2. The Right to a Process Free of Last Minute Changes. Comprehensive plan amendments cannot be changed in the seven days prior to the advertised public hearing. This allows citizens, commissioners, and others to fairly evaluate the document and not be subject to an endless "shell game" of last minute changes. If the plan amendment is revised within that period, the hearing will be postponed unless all affected parties agree otherwise.

3. The Right to a Supermajority Vote on Major Decisions. It shall be easier to require a "super majority" vote for many types of comprehensive plan amendments that directly impact on growth and development decisions.

4. The Right to More Easily Challenge Decisions Made by Your Local Government. Current citizen standing and legal review standards shall be improved to make the process more equitable, quicker and less costly.

5. The Right to be Free of Fear of Unwarranted Legal Retaliation. In order to promote more active involvement, private citizens and organizations shall be shielded from any developer-initiated SLAPP suits.

1000 Friends is also working on developing model language that would allow citizens of cities and charter counties to propose an ordinance by petition, and to enact it by referendum if the governing body refuses to act, or by majority vote to nullify an ordinance already enacted.

In addition, 1000 Friends is advocating that the judicious conversion of rural land to urban density--in the form of compact, walkable, mixed use communities in appropriate locations--shall only be undertaken in fair trade for significant public benefit. This shall include the permanent preservation of natural and agricultural lands and open spaces.

Florida's population and developed land are projected to double over the next 50 years, and the state faces many uncertainties due to the impacts of rampant sprawl, the loss of rural lands, and climate change. Now, more than ever, Florida needs a visionary and workable planning process.

1000 Friends is urging the Department of Community Affairs and the 2008 Legislature to begin enacting these provisions this session. We are pleased that DCA Secretary Tom Pelham has incorporated many of these recommendations into the preliminary draft of his proposed "Citizen Planning Bill of Rights," to be presented to the legislature this session. Please help by contacting your state legislators and asking them to do their part to empower the citizens of Florida, before our state's natural beauty and quality of life are lost forever.

If you live in Jacksonville you are most likely an over weight cheese puff stained one or two issue (abortion and/or gay marriage) SUV driving, suburban dwelling hypocritical Republican christian.

But there is that one issue that is much closer to your heart than the two list above. Money. That's right money, you fat greedy bastard.

The reason you need to get on board with putting an end to sprawl is simple. Once developers are reigned in and the land around you becomes untouchable by developers. You win. It's the old supply and demand analogy. Less housing means the value of your home goes up. Developers don't lose either. They will turn their attention to the urban core. And a vibrant well developed downtown will attract more people to move here continuing to drive up your property value. You win Again.

Developers will also have to make better use of the land they do have access to in the suburbs. You know all those blighted shells of buildings that formally housed Walmart or Publix? Well the developers would now have to figure out how get the most out of those areas by building up and not out with mix use properties. Which of course in turn once again raises you property value. You win for the third time.

While out riding downtown last I happened on some new images by Urbismus last night. I think this series of images is without a doubt some of the best artwork to hit this city in quite some time.

The first one I saw was the Punk Rocker on the Corner of Jefferson and Forsyth now has a pit bull.

On the same building as the Punk Rocker above is a guy playing guitar. The picture below is on Broad between Beaver and State streets.

Next is a cool little image of a kid peeking through a hole in a wall. I found several of these throughout downtown. I'll let you find them for yourself.

A new little twist is the addition of Urbismus Tracks (mouse or rat foot prints) along the pavement. In the picture below you see where the Urbismus emerged from the grate.

For the Last 3 months I have made the move from car dependent to car-lite and would love see Jacksonville become a city where living car-free is not a laughable joke.

I have gone from filling my gas tank once a week to once a month by simply riding my bike for all things personal. And if I didn't have to have a car to perform my job I would be totally car free.

Lately I have been attending meetings. Meeting on environment. Meetings on transportation. Meeting about planning meetings. I am sick to death of meetings.

Most of these meeting are about one thing. Educating the masses as to why they should change their lifestyle. Here's the rub. The masses don't want to be educated. How many of you enjoy being lectured as to how you should live your life?

If the general public don't want to be educated or lectured. What do they want? How does any one person or group cause wide spread lifestyle changes in the masses. The answer is simple. They want to be sold. Yes, advertising. Slick glossy ads produced by suits with slick glossy hair in slick and glossy buildings in New York City. If you want want people to get out their cars and start using bicycles and mass transit you need to sell them on it. You have to make them want it. You have to convince them that making the change will lead to better skin, bigger dicks and getting laid more often. Ads that pull at their heart strings and cause even the toughest mullet wearing yahoo to openly weep.

Need proof? Back in the 70's this country was a shit pile of trash along the roadways and in public spaces, along with massive industrial pollution. Then overnight one ad changed it all.

This ad was so powerful that the masses started clamoring for change so loud that elected officials were forced to take action. The US enjoyed it's first real enviromental movement.

The other day I attended a meeting of BPAC (Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee).

I was rather shocked to learn that only one local bike shop owner was on the board or active within the group. And he didn't even bother to show up. Now you can bet your last dollar if my business was to sell bikes. I would be taking an active part in communicating with all the other bike shops to pool our resources to make my city as bike friendly as possible. Which of course would lead to more sales and money in my pocket.

Sporting thigh-high stockings and a debonair smile, the 19-year-old ignored the dropped jaws and wide-eyed stares as she boarded a Bloor line train yesterday.

Hein was among some 75 semi-naked people who boarded the train together as part of a multi-city exercise by Improv Everywhere – an online collective dedicated to causing public chaos and joy.

Some of the Toronto pranksters chose form-fitting polka dot briefs, others plaid boxers – thongs were discouraged – as they slipped, deadpan, among startled riders.

"Where are their pants?" asked a middle-aged rider, Anab Ali, who seemed slightly disturbed by all the half-naked men and women planting their bottoms on seats around her.

Two other riders – Lindsay Olson and Mandy Leinbach, both 15 – took good looks at the bared flesh and traded comments as they gripped a pole to keep their balance.

"What is wrong with this civilization?" asked a mystified Olson while one prankster, Jeremy Dziewir, 19, did chin-ups in his briefs at the risk of revealing too much.

Eliciting wondering looks, smirks and disgust from people mostly too timid to ask questions, the pranksters rode the subway for an hour from Dundas West to Donlands and back.

Suzana Barbosa, a 28-year-old singer, organized the outing here to coincide with similar disrobings yesterday on public transit in New York, Chicago and six other U.S. cities as well as Adelaide in Australia.

She said it was meant to be liberating for those taking part and amusing for everyone else.

Randy, 23, who was willing to reveal his legs but not his name, saw it as a psychological experiment.

"This was important to my personal growth. Doing things like this that you wouldn't normally gives you confidence," he said.

"We're always worried about not looking bad. If I can walk onto a subway without pants and feel confident, then I break any barrier."

Here is an idea I think that may just start to generate some interest for the local art scene. It's called Shopdropping and you can find out more about what it is below if you care to know. I have used it for years to promote my shows with very good results.

If the public won't come to us, then it is time to take things to them. And where should we take the art you may ask. To where the people are. Walmart, Target, Publix, etc..

"Otherwise known as reverse shoplifting, shopdropping involves surreptitiously putting things in stores, rather than illegally taking them out, and the motivations vary.

Anti-consumerist artists slip replica products packaged with political messages onto shelves while religious proselytizers insert pamphlets between the pages of gay-and-lesbian readings at book stores.

If Jacksonville is famous for anything. It is the fact that it is a backwards butt wipe of a small town. Oh, you have to give it's past leaders credit for trying to break that image throughout the years. All of which have proven to be ill-conceived and lacking the vision needed to bring Jacksonville out of the dark ages and into the current century.

We now have what will be perhaps the largest boondoggle of this citys history. JTA's Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). Which is purposed to be part of JTA's Regional Transportation System (RTS). And if you are stupid enough to buy into JTA's propaganda this is what you can expect.

"RTS is a system that includes a variety of innovative, exciting opportunities to improve our methods of transportation. These may include commuter rail, river transit, high-tech bus rapid transit, transit-oriented development centers, service improvements, future engineering and a state-of-the-art regional transportation center that will serve as the hub of it all."

Now even if you are only slightly intelligent you will be able to read from that passage on JTA's site that JTA doesn't really have a plan. May include? If you (JTA) had any type of viable plan, wouldn't you know exactly what types of transportation the plan included?

This morning I awoke to not one but two articles from the Times-Union (Jacksonville's favorite TP) on the BRT in my in box. The first is about Metrojacksonville (pro-rail) vs JTA (Pro-BRT). My favorite quote in the article from a JTA spokesman about MetroJacksonville is;

JTA says it wants cooperation:

"They could be much more influential if they would do it as a cooperating entity in our program," the JTA spokesman said. "There's nothing we would like more than a blogging organization that would support transit."

In other words, please stop trying to rock the boat. Sit back, shut up and let us continue to fuck up this city's future.

The second article is chalk full of quotes such as;

"The philosophy is people will ride transit if it's reliable and quicker," said Dennis Hinebaugh, director of the National BRT Institute at the University of South Florida in Tampa, explaining that bus trips usually take far longer than car trips. "If you can come close to being the speed of an automobile, that's pretty good. The problem in the past is that the bus isn't reliable."

Anyone who has lived in Jacksonville for any amount of time knows how pathetic the current bus system is. Does anyone really expect JTA to figure out how to run one efficiently with a BRT in place?

Yet another quote;

"Dedicated BRT lanes could be turned into light rail corridors in the future", JTA says

Um, what? When? In another 27 years when you finally figure out what a fucking boondoggle your BRT plan was?

Now I'm not the smartest individual, but I know when I'm being handed a load of shit. Anyone who has spent any time in any major city in the world knows how well a rail system works for the masses.

JTA, get back to me when you have a viable plan that tells me exactly what modes of transportation are planned for your RST, the routes and how they work with one another. Oh, and how fucking much it is going to cost! Perhaps you would get much more respect and cooperation if you spent some time getting the current bus system a little more efficient. Say, a bus every 15 or 20 minutes instead of the current 45 minutes to an hour.

Wake the fuck up Jacksonville and learn what is happening with your money!

Slapstick, melodrama, catastrophe and the natural world appear as key themes throughout his works. Very hard to pin this guy down, as his persona was as slippery as his subject matter.

I am hopelessly addicted to Current TV (Channel 107 on Comcast) and Current.com. If you have not yet had a chance to view Current TV, it is like YouTube with a brain. The content consists of "Pods" which are simply segments on various subjects shot and submitted by the viewers.

A Better Jacksonville Plan

I think it's time for this town (note: I didn't say city) had an enema. This town has been run by the good old boys system of government for way to long. This town needs to be dragged into the 21st century kicking and screaming. Jacksonville needs leadership with vision. Leadership that understands how much potential Jacksonville has.

Leadership that understands what an Urban Core is and what Jacksonville's could be. Leadership that isn't afraid to call bullshit on the City Council, JTA, JEA and any of the prehistoric ideas they have and may come up with to "better Jacksonville".

A leader of redevelopment that knows how important historic architecture is to the future and character of a city. A leader in the support of local arts and artists.

I know the Mayoral election isn't until the spring of 2011. But this is the time to start thinking about who we as a people are going to replace mini-mayor with. Like it or not a campaign is nothing more than a popularity contest. And the group that creates an early buzz for their candidate has a big advantage.

I think it's time for the Jacksonville's urban core, Downtown, Springfield, Riverside, and San Marco to take the lead. By this, I mean we should back a winner.

I am officially throwing my full support behind the election of Biggie Tea himself, Tony Allegretti. Think about it. This is a Better Jacksonville Plan.
